WOC Nude Series: essie ladylike

essie ladylike
my post-nail-rip thumb
Well, I'm done school thank god! And I did pretty kick-ass. Now I'm just going to be working over the summer hopefully to pay for rent and save a bit for tuition. Good old University life, eh? Other than that, I really hope to be posting more now in summer that I am near my good camera AND the lighting sitch is drastically better. Ironic, I didn't put on my darks in winter much now I'm just like, gimme all the dark maroons please.

BUT, my friend lent me this polish and I was real happy she did because I keep debating on whether spending the $8 is worth it or not (now that my income has changed to, well, nothing HAHA). I gotta say I think it's worth it. ladylike will make you feel like a fucking lady.

Also - I didn't intentionally do this as a post for the nude series but as I was looking at it, it actually is a good nude. Lemme tell you though, I was helping someone move into their place and I built a bunch of furniture (table, chairs, bed, sofa etc) after I did my mani. Funnily enough, I was checking every couple hours to see if I had sustained any major chips. I'm happy to report this paint job lasted through that! DEFZ worth the $8.

WOC Nude Series: OPI Hopelessly In Love

OPI Hopelessly In Love
direct sunlight, three coats
Here is another post that I have been sitting on. It's part of my WOC nude series, which are reviews of nail polishes that I think could constitute as a nude polish for women of colour. I don't think I have anymore of these sitting in the vault so I will have to do a bunch of swatches in the summer of more nudes to show you what they look like.

I know it can be a bit of a struggle to find nice nudes if you have dark skin. First of all, most bloggers have light/fair skin and then almost all the swatches you search for in google are white. So it's hard to know if buying that one colour is going to work for you. I think I've also bought so many polishes that I've just accepted that idgaf about what the colour will look like on me. If I really hate it, I'll trash it. Or I'll use one of those OPI sheer tints topcoats and give it a different colour.

That being said, I love this colour. I really do - I left it at home though because I couldn't bring all my nudes with me. And you know what, I love the name of the colour too. I think it's very fitting and definitely could be used as a bride. OPI describes it as "A pink as true as true love" awww. How cute.

ART: Spring Time Whimsy

Essie turquoise & caicos, Color Club Revealed, Revlon Whimsical
three polishes mixed together to get this look
I just am going to post the last few vault items I have as "art" mostly because I don't remember the way the polishes worked when I applied, and even more so because I used multiple nail polishes to get the desired look.

So this one… I saw the Deborah Lippman Glitter in the Air nail polish back when it was released and I remember wanting it soooooooooooooooooo bad. I was jonesin' for it! However, I couldn't justify spending THAT much on that polish (ironic now considering how much I have spent on polish). Some reviews of it were also kinda less than stellar so I got over it.

One day, I was just browsing the nail polish section in Shoppers (like I normally do), when I happened to come across Revlon's Whimsical! Now, damn y'all it's pretty much the closest dupe to the GITA polish in drug store brands. So I bought it and applied it and found that it wasn't opaque enough to give me that look I wanted. It actually made my nails look like I had a fungal infection or something because the polish has that greenish vibe in it.

So I tried different ways of wearing it. I put Whimsical over top of OPI Samoan Sand, and it looked alright but not the look I wanted. I will try that again with a more nude/neutral polish. I also put it over top of other aqua/green/teals but kind of left it alone after a while. Then I bought turquoise & caicos and came up with this mani. Since it's spring time and people are celebrating Easter soon, I decided now's a good as time as any to post this up. Enjoy!

QUICKIE: Old Trend Bridal

This is going to be my quickie post, just a simple picture of the mani and a few details of the polishes. I found this one lying in the vault for instagram but never did create a nail instagram so now I have all these single shots of mani's. Hope you don't mind!

Nasty Nails 2.0: How I Rehab'd my Nails

I wrote a post a while ago about how my nails were getting to a point of EW. When I used to work retail, a lot of women and girls would stop and talk to me about the nail colour I was wearing and they'd usually mention something about the fact they "can't" do that because their nails are too short, too raw, too etc. I found a lot of these ladies would make it seem like that's just how their nails were. Just, a simple fact that could never be remedied. But I used to tell them how nasty and gross my nails and cuticles used to be.

For me, growing up I used to bite my nails. I actually remember someone teasing me when I was in elementary about my hands. They said that I had been shoving my hands up my ass and that they were covered in poo. Look, when you have dark skin, sometimes it appears darker on your knuckles and around your cuticles. I remember that about my hands when I was a kid and I know that biting them made it worse. That remark actually made me feel even worse and I just ended up perpetuating the cycle. Overall, I remember I was stressed about life so I think I just turned to biting my nails and the skin around it as a coping technique. It worked, so why stop?

Some time before grade 8, I lived with family in Saskatchewan for a bit. While I was there, I met this really nice girl who I thought was the epitome of gorgeousness. She had these really nice long nails and always wore polish and a small part of me was so jealous. I had these stupid, ugly, short nubs of nails. Long story short we spent a lot of time together and she always told me that nail polish looks good on both short AND long nails and that I should stop saying "I can't wear nail polish". I mean, it's obvious now but when you're a young girl going through puberty and all those other changes I never realized it. I just needed someone pretty to tell me. So I began wearing some nail polish.

FFWD into high school and alas, the same problem existed. I still chewed on my nails and my BFF always told me not to because she was disgusted by it. Fair enough, she drilled it enough into my head that I really cut down. I didn't change or stop doing it, but I didn't do it as much and began picking at my nails instead.  I mean I always liked nail polish because it allowed me to express who I was. Before wearing dark colours was chic, you usually didn't see it on many people. And I liked that. FFWD into university and I was still doing the same thing. Especially during exams - I would just go to town and pick and pick and pick at them. It was gross! They were so raw! But that's just how I dealt with stress at the time.

Now, sometime along there I realized I just really wanted to have some pretty nails and I didn't want to deal with the sting of having raw cuticles. I mean, I don't really know what changed but I think I saw improvement in the condition of my nails and I realized that hey, maybe my nails will be ok. So I started to try to fix them. I don't have many pictures of my nails from when I was in junior high and high school but suffice it to say, they were WORSE than these.

Here's a collage of my nails from about 2009ish. You can see there are parts that are just raw, and areas where my cuticle is jagged and not one cohesive line of cuticle. I put these together to show that it took me time to get my nails to where they're at now and TRUST, they STILL have a ways to go. BUT, don't be discouraged if you're looking at blogs and jealous of other people's nails. Just find what works for you. Identify your problem first and then find a solution. A lot of people suggest eating Biotin or increasing your leafy greens intake. I didn't do that I just worked at it slowly. It wasn't until I started seeing results that I took my nail care more seriously.

Here's a step by step of roughly how I fixed my nails.

  1. Stopped biting my nails as much as I could.
  2. Stopped picking at my nails as much as I could.
  3. Began using hand lotion more frequently.
  4. Began to actually cut my nails regularly, and filed them after.
  5. Began wearing nail polish more often because I would damage my nails less when I had them polished.
  6. Started using Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails polishes.
  7. Started filing my nails in ONE direction.
  8. Started using OPI's Nail Envy.
  9. Invested in cuticle oil and cream. You can use whatever but I bought Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream and OPI's Avoplex.
  10. I would carry the cuticle cream with me and apply when I could, and Avoplex before bed. I would try my absolute BEST to stay away from touching hangnails. When I saw them I covered them with cream and did intense treatment of them. Sometimes I even bandaged it up so I wouldn't pick at it while it healed.

When I get overwhelmed and stressed, my nails are the first thing to go. I will just ignore them. Usually I stop using the creams and lotions which makes my naturally dry hands that much worse. Then I pick at the dry cuticles and it gets worse and worse. I have to be conscious of how I treat them for sure. As you can tell from the blog, the quality of my nails and cuticles usually fluctuates. The biggest step forward is to stop picking at them. Once you can commit to that, everything else just seems easy peasy.

I hope this helps someone!

peace n love

ART: Expensive Pink Chocolate [VAULT]

ORLY Pink Chocolate
like, don't you love?
So basically I'm too lazy to do a "real" post on this nail look that I did a looooooooooonnngggg time ago. But only because I have 3 different nail polishes on and I wouldn't really know which one to "review." I mean, in a quick sense all of them are pretty good but each one has something different to offer so I didn't want to run down each one or have to pick one. So that's why I used my nail art template to do this one hahaha, whoopz.

I just called it expensive pink because that interplay of gold and pink reminds me of the MAC eyeshadow Expensive Pink (and also, A England nail polishes ain't cheap yo).

So this is from WAY BACK. At least the camera quality is a step up from the last post but this as before I had dSLR (which I don't have anymore) so it's still kinda shoddy. When I say way back, I mean August of 2013!!! I figure I might as well post it. I actually think I have an even older post that needs to be done from 2012 hahaha - I'll do that one next.

Anyways on to the mani!

OPI Where Did Suzi's Man-Go?

from here
Well took me long enough but I finally put on OPI's Where Did Suzi's Man-Go? from last year spring summer collection. WHOOPS. Well I mean I'm not one who really cares for in-season polishes or whatever. I just never got around to wearing it out asides a quick swatch when I bought it. So I don't reallllllly care that much. Asides, I kept reaching for different versions of this polish (more orange more coral more yellow etc).

It's pretty nice though, and it does have a bit of a mango feel to it. Like a really coral type of mango haha. I do think the colour of this depends on the colour and tone of your skin but overall it wasn't bad. I have a bunch of other ones from the same collection that I have yet to fully wear out. The yellow one is real nice but I left it at home.

The pantone tangerine tango colour I have up here is what my eyes see when I wear OPI Where Did Suzi's Man-Go? Just imagine this nail polish as a tad bit more orange, and brighter than the pantone colour.

I don't have a camera anymore so all I have is my cellphone to take pictures which does not have the same quality as iPhone cameras. So the pictures aren't the greatest but since no one really reads the blog anyways it shouldn't matter lol.

OPI DS Reserve (vault post)

OPI DS Reserve
indoors, no direct light, softest version of this
FROM THE VAULT: Pink and I have an interesting relationship. I used to hate it because I felt the colour itself pigeon-holed girls/women into a stereotype... super girly, kinda ditzy, very superficial, very princessy etc. It's a colour that means more than it should. I for one am all for men wearing pink. In fact, I find it pretty sexy to see a guy at a reception rocking a pink shirt with a grey suit. So I don't usually go for pink. Lately, because of it's subtle-ness and warmth, I've been attracted to sheer light pinks and the boldness of hot pinks (with warm undertones). But this is one of the those pink polishes that ended up surprising me and renewing my feelings towards this kind of pink. I'm not a fan of the bubblegum or barbie pinks (this isn't that). I like the mauves with pink leanings or that "rose" colour (this also isn't that). It's more of a warm toned, medium pink, that's filled with holographic glitter that looks like flecked glass/holographic flecks to a lazy eye.

I really wanted to pick up a couple others but I don't think it's smart for me to be buying super expensive nail polish at the moment since I'm only down to one job. When I had my second job, it was a bit easier to splurge because my paycheck from retail was my fun-money… but alas.

Out of the Designer Series I only own a few:
DS Luxurious
DS Reflection
DS Reserve

I'm happy with the three I have and maybe I'll even do a comparison between oranges with the DS Luxurious! Keep reading for my thoughts and pics...

China Glaze Jamaican Out (vault post)

China Glaze Jamaican OutFrom the vault: I was at Sally's one day and I had recently signed up for their beauty card. So as I was perusing the shelves for hair brushes (lets be real here, I went for hair brushes but knew I'd walk out with nail polish) I ended up "innocently" walking towards the China Glaze display because it actually looked stocked for once.

My eyes were immediately drawn to Jamaican Out. It looked like a red-orange in the bottle and seemed really bold and sexy. So I picked it up and flicked it around in the light and decided to buy it (along with another polish that was a complete fucking dud). When I got home I did a quick swatch on a white box and was so excited to try it.

So…….. fast forward about two months later and I still hadn't tried it LOL. So one day I brought it to work with me to show a coworker how I apply my nail polish. Turns out another wanted to try it on and I jumped at the chance, so we decided to make it an office mani day :P Sometimes I wish my day job was to swatch nail polishes and give people manicures. But I go through cycles of loving and hating it so that wouldn't be a very steady career. ANYWAYS, so I had the opportunity to slap it on and i instantly fell in love. There is no better feeling than a polish living up to your own expectations. Read on for pics and details about it...

Nail Art: Pinkurple Texture Mani

So this will be a fancy little surprise for anyone who reads my blog lol, welcome back? BRING ON 201555555555555555555555555555555!!! Nah who knows how often I'll post (probably not in a long time, these things take forever to post!).

So I have moved to another city in the same province for school. And out of my 400 something nail polishes I ended up bringing up about 100 of them up because man they're a pain to move. I was so paranoid they were going to break :O that would be a DISASTER. So I came with optimism (and I'm a bit salty about it). Here I thought I'd have time to do my nails but nope, I've been pretty focused on school and now I paint my nails pretty much biweekly and from September to October I don't think I painted them… wow.

I bought all this striping tape with me off Amazon up to my new place but damn, I have YET to use it and it's almost been 8 months since I got it!!! I've been uninspired -___- so I finally thought, I've done enough homework today that I can do my nails and then post it, woooooo #getitgirl

So here it is… it's super simple, but I actually love the colour combination. Enjoy!!
