Sephora by OPI - Wardrobe Change

sephora by opi wardrobe changeHere's another swatch of a nail polish I did back in winter. It's an old one that I picked up during Sephora's huge blowout sale of their old nail polish line. It' Sephora by OPI's Wardrobe Change. I usually don't wear colours like this but I saw a few swatches on the internet and I thought hey maybe this will be nice... and it is pretty nice. Not my favourite, but it's decent. I wouldn't say it's unique either but if you like this kind of finish and look then you'll enjoy this polish.

Speaking of Sephora nail polish - I haven't bought any of the Formula X nail polishes. Simply because I think they're soooooooo overpriced! I mean, of their range - there are only a FEW I would pick up. By few I mean like 3. And I find that there colours are just OK. They do have a lot of bright colours but at the same time, I feel I have dupes of all of them already. I can't justify it, can you? I don't know, I mean, maybe they're chip-proof or made with fairy dust or something but why pay $13 or $15 for Formula X when I can go buy Orly or OPI for $9? Just my bitchiness I guess, eh. If anyone has ever used Formula X drop a comment below and let me know what you think of it... I want to know what the big deal is!

Nail Art - Spring Windmill

As you noticed I'm not really regular with my posting mostly because A) I don't have a lot of regular readers and B) I like the no-pressure which allows me to get swatches in when I can and when it's sunny out :) but that also means I get super lazy with picking up and trying new polishes or being creative. Right now I'm not super into my nail polish in fact it's because my nails are fucking atrocious at the moment. Sometimes it's just like that eh? When you have so many to choose from you kind of get overwhelmed and then you get lazy… then you start picking and not caring yada yada yada here I am with some nail art I did before all that bullshit happened. Here's what I wrote back then:

Slowly, it seems the news of my nail obsession has made its way around the office and looks like there are more ladies interested in NP than I had previously thought. After having a conversation and flaunting my collection with them, I went home all fired up and genuinely re-excited about nail polish. So I hunted for my striping tape because a mani idea hit me but I couldn't find it :( so I just used standard scotch tape for this one but I got to say, I even impressed myself lol. I don't like posting my nail art because so many other people out there do it so much better than me. But I felt this one was special enough to make it's way onto the blog. Teehee.. take a look!

WOC Nude Series: China Glaze Golden Spurs

China Glaze Golden Spurs swatch
China Glaze Golden Spurs in direct sunlight
So I took this swatch a while ago, I'm talking months. I think I didn't like my nail shape or something that I was hoping to update it. But alas, my nails are fuckin disGUSting right now so I didn't do it. Oops. Nah I don't really care (which is a lie, I do care, otherwise I would've posted by now). I figure I might as well go back digging and post something to show I am alive.

I've updated my collection catalogue as well so all my nail polishes are there. I'm going to actually take some pictures and talk nail storage as well in another post. Maybe I'll do it this weekend with my shitty camera.

So anyways, I picked up Golden Spurs years ago and I hadn't worn it since I decided to swatch this haha. It's an interesting colour, I think some people will either love or hate it. Not too sure… but keep reading to see what you think of it :)

Nasty Nails 1.0

So... I haven't posted in a LONNNNNGGGGGG time. Mostly due to the fact that I've resorted back to my old habits of biting my nails and picking at them. Usually it's brought on by stress and boredom, but I haven't really been either so I'm not sure what's making me revert to bad bad bad bad habits. I really think painting my nails is what prevents it from happening and lately I've been very indifferent to my collection.

My nails right now are chipped and peeling at the tops. I've been trying to lazily remedy them but haven't given much of a true effort. I've had a few hangnails that I've pulled on and caused infections which makes for painful nubs. :( The cuticles are completely dried out, cracking, and bleeding.

So basically, I felt no desire to put any picture of my gazillion nail polishes up because quite frankly, it's embarrassing to look at these nails. #shudder

So to get back to it, I'm going to pull a few pics I have from a few months ago and just post those. I'll update my nails and do a proper post about them with pictures. I'm going to attempt to rehab them so I'll keep track of what products I used and what not. So anyways, a new blogpost should be coming today.

peace n love

NCLA Call Me For The After Party

NCLA Call me for the after partyIn case you haven't noticed (which you probably have) I write a lot, like, A LOT. I naturally am a writer (poems n stories n shit, yes I have a third blog for that but I haven't updated it since 2008) and if you've ever met me in person I'm a chatterbox - especially when it comes to nails, issues regarding femnism/racism, anything Whedon, or hockey! Anyways, I thought I'd just reveal that. Not like it needed revealing...haha. SOOOOOOOOOO, for some reason I have this aversion to blue. I like it on other people and I like the polishes but I noticed I never reach for them on my own shelf. I'm sure I mentioned this before as all my posts are out of sequence at the moment.

So since I have like 400 polishes and haven't worn them all, I asked my coworker to pick a colour and I'd wear it the next day. She picked dark blue... I flipflopped between the NCLA one I'm going to show you and China Glaze's Up All Night. I decided to try the NCLA one since I have yet to use any of the ones I got from that brand lol.

It's a great colour and overall great polish, don't get me wrong. I just don't really enjoy it as much as I probably should have... it seemed a little overrated. As a disclaimer, I am going through an anti-blue phase though lol, so who knows, in a few months I might be gaga for blue. Keep reading to see my pictures and review of the polish...

OPI No More Room for the Blues

OPI No more room for the blues swatchAs I mentioned before, I went to Edmonton for the game and it was beyond dismal. I'm actually pretty depressed about that still (especially since TSN won't stfu about "watergate") so I won't even talk about it. But the morning after, I was getting into the car and the door wasn't unlocked and I broke two nails on my right hand. Have you guys ever done that? The nail on middle finger broke dangerously close to the nail bed but thankfully it missed tearing the skin off by approximately a millimeter.

So needless to say I was feeling a bit blue. [And in fact, I've noticed almost all the recent mani's I've done are blue. Haha sorry about that folks - I have one more blue one ready to go in the vault so after that I can do another nude and a red] So, I decided to remedy that by slapping on one of my untrieds (lezbehonest I have so many untried I should not be allowed to buy until I use alllll). I just actually bought this in 2014 after seeing a swatch on a blog... now I can't remember who it was! Anyways, I have yet to swatch it so a couple nights ago me and my bestie were hanging out and decided to paint our nails. I suggested Funky Dunkey for her and I grabbed this bottle for me.

Now I'm not really a fan of blue nail polish that isn't like an electric cobalt (my all time favourite blue is China Glaze's Frostbite). I've never been attracted to baby blues either. Or medium blues. Or navy blues… though, this is more of a sky blue though... read on to check out more pictures and see what I think!

Quickie - Oilers Gameday Mani

not so good picture but here are the polishes I used
So as a birthday gift, one of my besties bought me a ticket to an Edmonton Oilers home game. We live a few hours away so we decided to make it a long weekend trip :) Unfortunately they ended up losing (quite quite quite badly) and it was just a very very sad game. Like when I say bad… it was bad. People were boo-ing non stop and other people took it upon themselves to throw jerseys on the ice (which was disgusting). I was actually depressed after the game.

Anyways, before I left for the weekend, I wanted to do an Oilers mani (and I never will again, thanks to being a superstitious hockey fan). I had gone to Edmonton a while ago and went to West Edmonton Mall and in the sports store (I think Lids) and was SHOCKED to see these nail polishes! Hahahaha obviously I bought them without hesitation. They were expensive so I kinda had buyers remorse and considering they lost when I wore them… I definitely have buyers remorse. Nonetheless, its so cool. Click below to see the mani!

OPI AmazON... AmazOFF

OPI Amazon… AmazoffAs you've seen I had already swatched the liquid sands of the OPI Brazil collection that was just released. And from the whole collection there was one I was dying to put on, AmazON... AmazOFF. OPI's website describes it like so: "I'm making the switch to this deep jungle green." Some people have been saying teal leaning blue, but in store on a swatch stick and on my hand in most lights it appears as a jungle green. It's a wonderful colour and it definitely is a stand out for me. I actually paired it with an orangey-bronze-gold suit that I wore to my friends engagement and paired it with a chunni that had dark green beadwork.

OK, I'm about to show you how fuckin geek-nerd-loser I am right about now.... So the MINUTE I saw this, all I could think of was Sailor Jupiter from the Sailor Moon series and yes, I said "JUPITER... POWERRR!!!!" aloud when I put it on the first coat. hahahahahhahahahahahahaha there are some polishes that just scream certain Sailor Scouts and this one, is the first one I've ever found for Sailor Jupiter! (Yes I have others for the other Sailors..... hehehehehe) It's PERFECT!

Funnily, I have not yet swatched the rest of the collection yet. I'm going to definitely put them on soon though. Anyways, I'm not a super fan of green nail polish because most of it doesn't appeal to me but I'm glad to say this is a great colour - if you were debating it, I'd just push you to buy it :P keep reading for more details & pics!

Zoya Josie

Zoya JosieWE ALMOST HAD SPRING! Then it snowed again :( Oh well. Moving onnnnnn so, I only bought one Zoya polish in the past and it was the Buffy polish, which is one of my favourites (for many reasons).

Ok, lezbehonest - I only bought it because I am UHBSESSED with Buffy (I was going to insert a screen shot of my collection but decided against scaring any readers away).

I never really heard of Zoya in my innocent nail polish addict phase aka before I discovered blogs. But after I discovered nail blogs, I noticed a lot of people rave about the brand and I saw that they really do have unique colours! One of the big reasons I haven't bought a bunch of them is because they're not readily accessible up here. I more so have to buy online to get these so it's hard to swatch in store... since there is no store... ok I'm sure you got that lol.

But the colour intrigued me on some swatches so I decided to just jump in and buy it. And oh my god, am I ever happy I did because this is BEAUTIFUL. Like deadly. Looks gorgeous on dark skin, just gorgeous. I couldn't stop staring at it when I had it on. Keep reading for more pics.

WOC Nude Series: Sephora by OPI - Don't Feed The Hand Models

So before I get into the post I actually updated my wish list and even uploaded my catalogue of nail polishes in THE LOOT. So jump over and take a look! If you want any of those swatched just leave a comment!

One of my ex-friends gave me a pretty sweet gift (but she was into materialistic things and only concerned with image/perception) that I was really happy to receive! Not sure how many of yall have it, but she gave me the wonderful "Glimmer Wonderland" mini Sephora by OPI (SOPI) set. There's a stock photo of it!

From the Curvy Fashionista blog - POST HERE

As you can see, there's a huge range of polishes in this! From creme to shimmer, cool to warm, metallic to frost! When I got it, I was so overwhelmed. Being a student, I didn't really buy any nail polishes and held on to my cheap Sally Hansen's with a death grip. So getting this was a breath of fresh air. A complete palette of new colours to dabble in. And surprisingly... I NEVER EVER had tried a "nude" polish before these. I always thought it was a white-girl thing. So when I swatched it for the first time, I freaked out and subsequently turned my BFF (sup Neetu) into it!

The mini SOPI are alright but they are so small that the brush isn't really big enough for my nail length. So when the SOPI line was being discontinued I went and bought the 3 nail polishes I adored from the collection (Already Famous, I'm With Brad, and Don't Feed The Hand Models).

Antiqued Olive Look (OPI 4 In the Morning + Ski Slope Sweetie + Matte)

I've kind of mentioned it before, but I usually recycle my manicures. It's an easy way to be easy on your hands and limit the amount of remover and chemicals I put on them. I have dry skin and I live in a drying climate so I try to minimize the exposure to certain things. ANYWAYS, I had on OPI's 4 In The Morning from the Gwen Stefani collection that was just released. It's GORGEOUS. I'll swatch that later. And I was surprised as hell when I realized I was on day 6 and I had no chipping, just tip wear. Which is something since I type all day at work and text all night. So that's my shout out for that polish.

I also really loved OPI's Ski Slope Sweetie from the Mariah Carey holiday collection released last year. I don't mind wearing it sheer (I usually wear it with 2 or 3 coats) because it's very pretty and subtle enough to make do for a quick mani.

OPI A Woman's Prague-ative

OPI A Woman's Prague-ative
direct sunlight
Sometimes you see a colour online and you are kinda like "meh". But then you know everyone else has got it and you kind of feel peer-pressured into trying it out? That's how I felt about this polish, OPI's A Woman's Prague-ative. I saw it swatched on a few blogs and I realized asides from the Hunger Games orange polish (China Glaze Riveting?) I don't have a lot of it. But this looked like a burnt orange in the pictures, so I figured - hey, might as well add it to my collection because chances are, I'm going to want it when it's not available (just like Skyfall and Live and Let Die... WHY DID I NOT BUY WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE.)

I got to say, this polish is WHAM! WHAM BAM THANK YOU MA'AM! SO worth getting, and I don't think any of the pictures online really even capture the beauty of the polish. This was a surprise for me guys, I really didn't expect anything. Even when I had the first coat on I was like, "oh that's interesting its kinda red with pink with like large shimmer...hmmm" Once I had the second coat on, my eyes popped outta my fucking head that's how much of a surprise it was.

It's from the Spring 2013 Euro Centrale Collection, and I have the following polishes from it:
A Woman's Prague-ative (what I'm showing you today)
OPI... Eurso Euro (a royal blue)
Hands Off My Kielbasa! (an interesting pink/brown)
I Saw... U Saw... We Saw... Warsaw (a navy blue)
My Vampire is Buff (I've swatched it before and will re-swatch, a pink/yellow beige)
Oy-Another Polish Joke (yellow gold)
Polka.com (blue purple glitter topper)
Suzi's Hungary Again (bright medium pink)

Lemme know if you wanna see any of those - I'll probably swatch them later than sooner. :) Keep reading for the scoop on OPI's A Woman's Prague-ative.

Brazil by OPI - Liquid Sands Pt 2

I didn't want to waste your time by posting a lot here but I really do love these. My overall impression of the collection is that the packaging is nice, I'm sad they're only minis, it takes 2 thick or 3 thin coats to get opacity, and it takes less than 5 minutes to be dry to the touch but about 15-20 to be completely dry.

Here are just some bottle shots to show you the size in case you don't know what a mini looks like. The small bottle can be a little hard to handle but it's best if you just take your time. The bottle I used was Samba-dy Loves Purple.
Mini bottle :)

shows how small the brush is, so don't rush it when you dip it in for  some polish!

Brazil by OPI - Liquid Sands Pt 1

Well I decided to break up the OPI Brazil Liquid sands into two posts because I didn't want the single post to be too picture heavy. BUT it's still picture heavy. So today I'll swatch Samba-dy Loves Purple and I'm Brazil Nuts Over You. Seriously, who comes up with these names? They're so awesome - and so are the polishes. I'm a huge fan of the liquid sands by OPI. When they first came out, I thought they'd be like the shatter/crackle nail polishes that were a quick fad. I also didn't think I would like them but I seriously think they are amazing. They give you that fun alternate version of nail polish that still can be worn daily, as opposed to being a novelty.

The packaging was simple and it did a good job of holding the polishes in - no complaints. Keep reading for more pictures and thoughts on these polishes!

WOC Nude Series: OPI Glints of Glinda

OPI Glints of GlindaSo, lately I've really been into the sheer and delicate colours. Usually I go buy nail polishes based on other people's swatches or bottle shots that seem to be nice. Funny thing is, is that I've never really been into the soft shades. I've been attracted to bold, bright and vampy colours - hot magenta's or bold blues and oranges or fiery reds. Mostly because I feel that they look bomb against my dark skin. But now I feel myself being attracted to soft shades as well. And once I did some research into Glints of Glinda from Oz The Great and Powerful Collection, I figure I should buy it. This has been on my shelf for a year I think, so I'm really happy I decided to swatch it on that power Wednesday of swatching I did a while back.

Glints of Glinda is a sheer, peach/beige colour. It's more yellow-based and not very warm but not cool either (it's pretty damn neutral). You can build the opacity up but in general it will take roughly 4 coats. Sometimes these colours tend to look very stark against my skin. Sometimes the peach undertone doesn't quite come through or it's too yellow-based. This one is right on the fence. If it was a tad warmer it'd be THE perfect nude for MY skin tone. Nonetheless, I really thought this was beautiful and delicate. I know almost everyone raves about nail polishes but if you are into sheer this is great.

From the collection I only own 4 of them:
Glints of Glinda (the one I'm posting about today)
What Wizardy is This? (liquid sand that I love)
Which is Witch? (holo hex + bar glitter) and
Lights of Emerald City (I've posted earlier about this large glitter)

OPI Did It On 'Em

OPI Did It On 'EmYeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh, I am so happy I got this colour. I saw that nailpolishcanada.com was selling it and I scooped it up the minute I saw it. I don't really have any colour like this but I was really happy to find something. It's kinda ugly and it's kinda sexy. Pukey and fantastic all rolled up into a thick creme formula hahaha. Good news, it doesn't clash with my skin colour. Bad news, you gotta LOVE the colour to wear the colour.
But, I see potential for this colour being used in nail art. Mix it up with pink glitter or do a tape mani with a pink/copper colour, heck even gold. I really like that combo. If I ever get the breasticles to do nail art, I'll post up here. I really hate doing it because it usually sucks ass. Anyways, read on to get the scoop on this polish.

V Week - OPI Heart Throb

OPI Heart Throb
Outside, low light, with flash
Well it's almost Valentines day!!! I'm just waiting for the chocolate sales hehehe. But I also treated myself to more nail polish…  I just got a huge haul from nailpolishcanada.com and omg I'm dying to try them all. I've put a bunch of them aside to do on a day where I can swatch a lot but for now I picked the one I was most excited about. It's OPI's Heart Throb. mmm nom nom nommmmm I bought it because the swatches looked so nice: soft, not as pink, subdued and sheer.

OPI's site describes it as "A rosy pink that's true love." Awwwwwww, how appropriate for vday! WHICH was a TOTAL co-in-ca-dink. I don’t ever plan out mani’s according to season or holiday really. It's part of their soft shades collection and believe it's a permanent addition.

It’s a great colour but it’s a bit darker than I thought it would be, so I was a teeeeeeeensy weeeeeeeensy bit disappointed. I would say on my skin tone, it's not a rosy pink but rather a barbie pink, it's got a slight cool undertone that's barely perceptible but there. Keep reading! It's a bit pic heavy but I tried my best to capture the colour...

Bell's Palsy Update

Hello hello,

So as you may have seen I've posted about Bell's Palsy a few times. That's because I got it in September 2013. Now, in February 2014, exactly 5 months later, I am still dealing with some of it still. For the most part, it has gone away. I do notice that when it dips down to -30 during the winter my face is really sensitive to that. If I'm waiting for the bus and the cold wind is on my face, when I got on the bus I can feel the muscles contracting under my skin. It's really weird.

Also, when I close my eyes really tight there's a muscle that contracts by chin. Eating and drinking and brushing my teeth is all normal. I just sometimes feel that my inner cheek feels weird against my tongue.

The only thing that bothers me now is the fact my face is tender. If you push on it hard it hurts :(

But, I'm happy its gone. I definitely appreciate things much more.

Just wanted a quick update. I'm glad i'm in recovery :)

Peace n love

P.S. If you have any questions about Bells Palsy or are going through it - please don't hesitate to reach out. I know a few blogs definitely helped me out when I was going through the majority of it :)

WOC Nude Series: OPI You Callin' Me A Lyre?

OPI You Callin Me A Lyre?
3 coats, indoors office lighting
I'm not sure if it's just me or not but being a WOC in a beauty world mostly controlled by fair skin means I run into some problems. I want to do a certain look or something and sometimes it's really hard for me to find what I need to get that certain look I'm going for. Don't worry this ain't no pity party because there are some trends and colours that WOC can pull off like no tomorrow.

One of the things I've been convinced brown girls can't pull off is a nude lip and a nude nail. I will probably post on my other blog about the nude lip. But for now my focus in on nude nails.

I don't know why I'm so drawn to it but I love the gentle and sheer nail polish look that looks clean and fresh. I always look at swatches but I find my biggest problem is that I can't see what it looks like on a darker skinned hand. I've bought a couple duds out there (like Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Quick Sand) that just look so terrible. They look stark and just have a weird effect. I'll swatch a couple of the ones I bought that I personally hate on my nails. But then I saw a few swatches of the NYC Ballet Collection (NYC Ballet Soft Shades by Scrangie - her swatches are fucking amazing) and I just had to get them. After looking at her page I narrowed it down to 3 of the 6 available. I loved the look of You Callin' Me a Lyre? so I did some research into the name and stumbled upon their website.
The lyre, in a number of different forms, has served as the official symbol of New York City Ballet. It was the favorite instrument of the god Apollo. It represents the classical standards of harmony, form, balance and purity – ideals which the Company continues to define through the timeless art of dance. (source: NYCBallet)
I gotta say, looking at the nailpolish it is a nice colour that reflects the abstract quality of a balanced pure and harmonious nail polish. At least on my skin tone. This is a great nail polish for WOC. It's chic, professional and if you have VNL - it enhances it to look like you've just had your nails done professionally - giving you a  faux "American manicure" look.

One of my friends is getting married so I've been thinking more and more about Bridal colours. From what I can tell, Essie owns that field but I don't have a lot of Essies. So I think this is a great colour. I'm going to put this on my friend for her engagement shoot. It's definitely classic and fresh enough for a modern bride.
